WHATS THE BEST WAY TO EXPLORE ANNAPOLIS’ WATERWAYS?

Imagine the impressive views the first explorers experienced when, in 1608, they entered the waterways that would be known later as the Chesapeake Bay and Severn River. Miles of beautiful shoreline with water deep enough to allow the passage of large vessels. Inviting protective coves that made a perfect anchorage to debark for exploration ashore, or possibly escape a pending storm. The Chesapeake Bay offered endless food resources, from the plentiful sea life, to the feathered and fur bounty. The fertile soils made it a prime area for growing crops. When word got out about this beautiful area, people began to settle permanently on the river and Annapolis became a chartered City in 1708.

Jump ahead to 2018, Annapolis has grown to be a major destination for both sail and power vessels. Known as the “Sailing Capital of the U.S.”, Annapolis is the home of the National Sailing Hall of Fame and Museum. There is a proud tradition of world class sailing regattas run by local yacht clubs that are home to local and International racers and judges. Annapolis also lays claim to the Nation’s oldest and largest in-water boat shows featuring power and sailboats. Reference an Annapolis calendar and you’ll find some type of boating activity throughout the year.

So, how do you get on the water during your stay?  The water activities are as varied as the boats themselves.  Annapolis has options to rent canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddle boards to investigate the water at your leisure. You may want to charter a luxurious sail or powerboat for the day, or longer. There are charted boats that provide historical tours, sightseeing and even party options. You can set sail on a schooner for a sightseeing and sunset cruise. Looking for something for the kids?  Check out the pirate adventure or family fishing boat.

Annapolis Electric Boat Rentals offers vessels for an environmentally friendly powerboat ride. Powered by 16 golf cart batteries, the boats travel at a top speed of 6 knots (6.9 mph) producing very little to no boat wake, which helps to maintain shoreline stability by reducing additional erosion. Because the boats are electric, there is zero engine emissions or noise pollution to take away from the serenity of your adventure.

The water is a way of life in and around Annapolis.  Whether you are a salty dog or a complete landlubber, Annapolis offers many choices to get you on the water and create a lasting memory.
